The National Duals (college wrestling for the those that are not in the know) are in the books and Oklahoma State heads back to Stillwater with another title in hand. I have two major rant topics that come out of this. Rant #1: College wrestling gets way too little coverage and respect. College wrestlers are, without a doubt, the hardest working and most dedicated group of college athletes anywhere. They put in more work and sacrifice more then any college basketball, football, or baseball player ever. Then they go out for a man to man confrontation where no mistake goes unseen (and for the most part, no mistake goes unpunished either). The pure drama that is a high stakes wrestling match ranks right up there with any close basketball game. I challenge any of you that think of yourselves as true sports fans (or anyone willing to try something new) to go to a dual and find someone to really explain what is going on in the match. After a few times of being filled in, you'll start to understand why things happen the way that they do. Once you understand that, you'll start to see how dramatic the sport really is. Give it a try, the sport can always use new fans. The wrestlers deserve your support. Rant #2: Why is the national dual title not considered anything more then another tournament victory? The dual in wrestling is the ultimate test of a team. Most states have dual titles that are considered right up there with winning the State tournament title, but the national duals are barely mentioned when discussing the success of a program. Oklahoma State obviously needs no help in that regard (31 national titles), but I think people forget how dominant they have been in recent history at the National Dual Championships. I say, crown 2 national champions every year in wrestling. OSU would have swept last year, but many years the nations best dual team is not the nations best tournament team and seems to get ignored because of it. Last I checked wrestling was a team sport. This should be reflected in the NCAA records. |
